About Franktown

Initially known as “Franks Town,” Franktown was named after James Frank Gardner and the area’s early settlers in 1859. 1961 it officially became “Franktown” and was Douglas County’s designated county seat.

South of Denver and east of Castle Rock, Franktown is a small village tucked off the beaten path. At first glance, the town seems to be only a crossroads, with a few cafes, a Mexican restaurant, and gift boutiques. Appearances can be deceiving.

The history of Franktown, CO, includes Franktown Cave. It’s on private property, about two and a half kilometers southwest of Franktown. It is a large rock shelter where evidence of prehistoric societies dating back to 6400 B.C. has been identified. Artifacts included hide, wood, fiber products, maize, and other plant materials. During the 1940s and 1950s, more than 4000 objects were retrieved from the cave.

Franktown is an excellent stop for bikers of both the motorized and fat-tire variety. Castlewood Canyon State Park is also in the area, which features sheer canyon walls, rolling trails, and the remains of the century-old Castlewood Canyon Dam, making it very popular for tourists. Miles of scenic hiking trails, various technical rock-climbing routes, and outstanding bird-watching areas lie around the ruins.

Aside from the sheer beauty of Franktown, there are many historical facts to enjoy. Whether you’re planning on relocating or just passing through, Prairie Hawk Dental is on hand for all your dentistry needs, whether you’re a new or existing patient. Call today to book an appointment.
